The Odyssey Retold By Teilo Berquier

Scylla's Cave

A hidden cave high in the cliff face. Where Scylla lodges and from which her six heads come down.

A cave you cannot quite see, set high in the cliff above the strait, hidden in the mist that does not move. From it, when a ship passes close, six necks unfold like something that should not be able to move that fast. Six heads, each the size of a man’s torso, each with rows of teeth that catch the sun like bronze. They reach down to the deck and lift six men into the air. The screaming lasts maybe four breaths. Then the heads pull back into the cave and the light returns to the water and the cliff face is silent again. There is no way to see her before she comes, no way to fight her once she does. Her sword cannot be reached. The cave is the home of the cleanest, most uncheatable monster in the story. She lives above your reach, and that is the whole problem.
